Problem of Rayleigh Wave Propagation in Thermoelastic Diffusion

In this work, the problem of Rayleigh wave propagation is considered in the context of the theory of thermoelastic diffusion. The formulation is applied to a homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic half space with mass diffusion at the stress free, isothermal, isoconcentrated boundary. Using the potential functions and harmonic wave solution, three coupled dilatational waves and a shear wave is obt...

Rayleigh-wave Coupling to Atmospheric

THE THEORY of dispersive Rayleigh waves coupled to atmospheric compressional waves is derived for the case of a solid surface layer. Numerical computation of phase and group velocity curves indicates that an additional branch may be introduced to the dispersion curves as a result of air coupling. Amplitudes of waves propagated according to the various branches are briefly discussed. INTRODUCTIO...

Damped Wave Equation with a Critical Nonlinearity

We study large time asymptotics of small solutions to the Cauchy problem for nonlinear damped wave equations with a critical nonlinearity { ∂2 t u+ ∂tu−∆u+ λu 2 n = 0, x ∈ Rn, t > 0, u(0, x) = εu0 (x) , ∂tu(0, x) = εu1 (x) , x ∈ Rn, where ε > 0, and space dimensions n = 1, 2, 3. Assume that the initial data u0 ∈ H ∩H, u1 ∈ Hδ−1,0 ∩H−1,δ, where δ > n 2 , weighted Sobolev spaces are H = { φ ∈ L; ...

Forward four-wave mixing with defocusing nonlinearity.

We experimentally demonstrate degenerate, forward four-wave mixing effects in a self-defocusing photorefractive medium, in both one and two transverse dimensions. We observe the nonlinear evolution of new modes as a function of propagation distance, in both the near-field and far-field (Fourier space) regions.

Approximation of the Rayleigh wave speed

This brief note describes an asymptotic technique for accurate computation of the Rayleigh wave speed both in compressible isotropic and incompressible orthotropic half-spaces. As opposed to recent publications by Malischewsky and Ogden & Vinh, the Cardan’s formula for solving cubic equations is not used. A variant of Graeffe’s method for finding the moduli of zeros of polynomials is formulated...
